I paid a visit to a dietician today. He also happens to have received full medical training. Obviously a combination of covid, WFH and age took their toll on my what-I-wish-to-remember-as-gorgeous (ha!) body,
He bothered to explain that our lizard brains seek joy no matter what. Our lizard brain enjoys comfort food and sugary/ salty snacks and don’t give a damn about nutrients or going fatter! This is a bomb of thoughts and feelings! Is our brain so stupid that prefers death to constant joy? Is it the opposite? A short but constantly joyful life is it in the end better than a longer but less happy life? I was hoping nature would have sorted this out for us. Reason is our only defense to putting on weight and seeking the nutrients. Reason will stop us from overeating because it is reasonable to seek health. So quite perverse nature is, no? Gave us the need to seek joy no matter what and reason to prolong the agony of not being joyful all the time!
We also discussed that there was a version of species who might have been smarter and prefer high nutritious food and green vegetables to a burger or a slice of cake. These super humans however were quite likely made extinct in the various periods of famine! Darwin here is your biggest challenge ever: nature chose the dummies that prefer processed food joy to the enlightened that would live longer and happy with broccoli!
I know you can’t help me make sense of this one but if you are a nutritionist or a med professional would love to hear your views in the comments. I will read them all as I eat my yogurt and 150grams of protein 🙂
