Does anything happen for a reason?

You know, something really bad happens. There is the crying, the disappointment, the despair even. We are so scared of these emotions, we hate having them so much so we resort to words of consolation like “everything happens for a reason”, “the universe prepares you for something else and better”, “watch out for the silver lining”.

Ok, cool stuff. But if you really, really think about it, then there is the flip side. Why did the good things happen? If there is force out there spreading the evils, this or another force spreads the blessings. What does the universe wants us to make out of happiness? Or happiness is just our default? Or we just deserve happiness and the bad things in life are just breaks, lessons and milestones that better prepare us for the happiness we are destined to have?

Are some people deserving happiness more than others? Cause the evils and the blessings don’t seem that equally distributed. Are some people better at learnings the lessons the universe throws at them and then they enjoy a more prolonged happiness than others or a series of evils are waiting for them closer to the end of their lives to keep things even. And if so, towards the end, what is the point of keep learning. Can’t we live the last years before the end at piece? But you know, the end of life itself, if life is a journey of development and learnings and improvements, usually comes in a state of pain. Some nasty disease, some deteriorating or decaying experience comes just before the end.

I tend to conclude, life’s events are just random. Unevenly distributed and mean nothing. We contribute to them with some of our choices, we don’t always have the full info to even make the right decisions and right decisions of today or overthrown by the data of tomorrow. If we want to make something out of our experiences, we can. We can learn, move on, get the wrong lesson out of them or really grow, change our course and still continue to experience the happiness and the sadness as they come along. Maybe everything just happens, maybe we just live and nothing more. We are suffering because that is life and if we look life in the eyes, it might not be a shiny, beautiful state we are after. Just a complex, colourful, scary, nice sequence of events as random as the fact that we were born in the first place. Please help me make sense of this one too…

  1. Yes, I believe so. Thinking otherwise makes me feel down and purposeless actually.
