Some people these days claim AI can do art or that they can enjoy the art AI can produce…

Ok, is AI in the position to produce anything original at this point in time? Or it just rests on what is coded to do and what is already out there? Cause we have been dismissing plagiarism and lack of originality from criminal to simply bad. What is the gate we are opening now?

But even if authentically new, why have We not engaged all those skillful dogs that flood TikTok with their brushes in their mouth and stroking a canvas? What is the difference between the dog and AI at this stage? Well, the dog might actually have feelings to express and they (or donkeys even) have even been successfully starring in movies. Have we ever acknowledged these skillful and emotional creatures as artists or we are only prepared to do so for AI tools? And if so, why may I wonder? Obviously the only real benefit is that breeding a dog and training them to do anything more than barking and running is costly. AI is not. Has art once again fallen victim of capitalism? Art, the mere escape we have from greed, stress and rotten pursuit of wealth? (we then of course use wealth to buy art and show off the wealth or, for the rich with a little more remorse hidden somewhere, to pass off as humans with feelings still).

So what is art?

I love the English word “moved” as an impact of art. To me, authentic, human generated art, moves us. Takes us to a better level, deeper level, provokes feelings and thoughts. Ultimately, pushes us by experiencing the drama of the artist, to look deeper into ourselves, understand our nature and selves and grow. It is the exchange with the other person, the genuine message hidden behind the form that the artist wanted to convey. And in any good art, I doubt the artist chose that message. I think it was growing inside them and it would have escaped out in the world as any child forcefully would after 9 months.

Now performance of art is slight different you may think. The performer uses their body and talent to convey someone else’s message. Are they artists? The beauty of it is that despite rehearsals, the performer any time they perform, their act is slightly different. Their feelings on the moment, that are irrelevant to their performance, still pollute or enhance (depends how you want to see it) the performance. Their background does too. Can you honestly sing “don’t break my heart” and have an impact no matter how devine the voice and how perfectly that C note was reached if the singer’s heart has never been broken?

What humans don’t understand is that pretend God (and creating AI) is not about creating something perfect. I think God (or whatever you want to call that force in the universe), being smarter than us, obviously, made us imperfect and pathetic for a reason: so that we have limitless, surprising abilities. That made our journey on Earth unpredictable! We are in a way possibly his entertainment. Maybe God was not after a perfect movie but just wanted to watch an exciting one?

Maybe we can create art, cause we are a piece of art ourselves.
