I was listening to a podcast and the guest made the note we teach 4 year olds at school that they are not supposed to hit each other and then, 15 years onwards, we hand them a gun…
This statement is so achingly accurate and so shatteringly confusing that I know you can’t help me make sense of it even if I beg you.
The point is, humans are messed up. As an infant, human is allowed anything. The rest of humans would find the patience and the resilience to let the baby do whatever. Annoying things, with zero sense, because that is what babies do. It is actually a universally granted right to any baby to act like one. But, are we democratic and empathetic? Or are just afraid the baby will take away the scrapples of piece and calm we can afford by you know, crying….
Only a few years into human life and funny rules begin. Don’t burp, don’t fart, don’t eat with your mouth open. These rules make no sense to baby brain. Baby obliges however. Is the baby wise and stoic? Far from (if you have met at least one baby you will quickly agree). They are afraid you will take food away from them.
How this links to my first statement? Human rules never make sense but are successfully implemented when based in fear. Don’t hit little John in classroom (or you will end up alone). Grab a gun and kill John ( or you will end up dying). Come to work 9am everyday (or you won’t be able to afford your life).
Unsurprisingly, the entrepreneurs who discuss their success tend to share that they became successful because they did not care what others told them, they swam against the tide, did things differently and all in all did it their way. They are less in number than the rest of us still.
Maybe having an opinion and act without fear is key to success but also the key to end war. Imagine feeling allowed to reject the gun, imagine asking why I should or I should not and getting an honest answer. Imagine being taught how to think for yourself and do things differently or uniquely. Imagine us all in that mood and then imagine the world we could be living in….
