Was wrapping up a chat with a colleague the other day on Teams and when the colleague said I will send the email and take it from there, I was prompted to chose from three very valid options like “Ok, perfect”, “Great” and “Thanks”.
I impulsively clicked one of them and convinced myself I was happy I took some time back. I then had all the time I needed to ….scroll on insta a little more…. Oops…
Fear started kicking in following this little réalisation and it is one of those moments when fear is good: it’s a tool to alert us that something is going terribly wrong!
What is it this Teams or any other similar AI enabler is doing? Pretty much, rotting my ability to think. To use my brain. The same brain I worked so hard to educate, to develop, fill with art, experiences, skills. I don’t want to take any time back if it means my brain weakens. My brain, my cognitive ability is all have to be me. Experiencing life is a congnitive experience. Life is not always sensible, OK, but it is a cognitive experience. Cogito ergo sum guys!
It started with electronics diminishing our skill to write. I wonder if future kids will be able to pass a note to someone, to scribble a thought or a drawing on anything, to cheat an exam by writing their answer on their thigh…
Language, the ability to eloquently communicate thoughts, deliver ideas and influence is our most valuable skill. There is no sapiens without it. Any tool that enables unsharpening communication skills is not a useful tool. Fair enough, tools is what you make of them, so what do we make of them?
