I hear many successful people say “Don’t care what other people think of you”. They are successful they know better I guess. I am not.
I just find it hard to resonate (and after I do I will become successful I guess??). What I think is that you need to care. Others are essential part of our being. There is little we can do alone. We will not survive alone. We will not experience a good life alone. We need to find people who like us and will share their moments, their lives, their ambition, their genes with us. For that, they need to like us first. To have a positive opinion about us in the end.
The difference in my mind is that we do not wait for others to define us. To chose us. We are who we are and any moment in time we are not chosen by others and they become distant, respectful or absent, so be it.
If we picture you are ready to go on a car race. You will not wait for any permission by others. Others will not give you the label of the driver and then you will race. You will race if that is what you want to do and others have little to do with it. But others need to be the spectators and the competitors for the race to be fun.
Anyone saying you are a good or bad driver or predicting a win or a disaster do not matter indeed. Hooking into the opinions of others on this matter, might just hinder giving it your all. But you need the guidance of a good coach to get better and they need to respect you before they offer any mentorship. On the other hand, you might be better than them. Not overall, but for this race. Their guidance is not your recipe is just a tool. You mix it up with the rest of your skills and then you race.
In any case, you want some others to cheer you up along the way and be there to spray that champagne on them when you win. Or you fail, you need others to race to the hospital for you.
Overall, my life is not thanks to you. I am not waiting for you. But bits of it are nonsense without you, my dear others.
Please help me make sense of this one too…
